I was able to borrow this game from a friend, and was very excited to play it, I had heard nothing but great reviews about it. Little did I know i was about to spend the next few hours of gameplay wondering why everyone liked the game so much.
First i would like to start off with Graphics.
The graphics do not seem to change much from Gears 1 to Gears 2, with the same feel to it and the same look. Mostly all that changed was that the guns looked like when fired. I give it to Epic that they made the Guns more realistic and the bullets were a nice touch, but the rest of the world lacked the same luster.
The colors seemed to all be the same when in a certain environment, although yes it is the trademark of Epic, it seems like they could have added something more.
The Sound and music i thought was alright.
It did not pump me up as I thought it should. When playing a game, the sounds/music should be memorable and looking back i can't seem to remember 1 time where i admired it.
The Controls/UI
They stayed the same pretty much throughout Gears 1 and 2. Although it would have been nice to see some more instruction in the beginning on what the different executions are when you have an almost dead grub.
Storyline
The storyline/plot i felt was the worst. You don't even know what your fighting for except that there are people going to kill you, and your going to try to kill them first. only part way through do you find that you are going to try to find someone, but that isn't even the plot, there is no clear plot but to kill locust. and even then there is no clear plot as to how except when you get to the final chapter. Many of the levels were just re makes of levels in Gears 1 with different goals. You still had to drive a vehicle and shoot things, still went underground and had mishaps happen.
Also it felt that they tried to hard to appease younger audience. The Humor was just awful at times. When they are all falling into the worm the faces they make are just stupid and put in there for no real reason at all. Baird at one point yells shotgun when they are running to the vehicle. While Baird is known for his remarks, yelling shotgun is just not one of them.
The battles i felt were to sporadic. It seemed to be that you would be in a large battle made to make you feel awesome, then just get to the next part, then large battle, then get to the next part instead of a constant fight like in Gears 1.
I felt as if they put in too many little puzzles for you to figure out, almost as if they made minigames of some sort. It became an
"alright you fought that battle, now go cut these 4 things, alright get past that gate, fight a few, now go push those buttons in order, good job, lets go try to make it to all these crates now, oh wait we have to turn these 3 wheels first"
Overall Fun
This game is as fun as running around and killing things gets. By half way through you learn the easiest way to kill a certain creature and it soon just becomes repetitive.
Replay Value
I find that the Levels just get boring, and multiplayer is just dull with not many change ups round to round.
